Chamber of Commerce and Why You Should Join

by Carrie Byars

One of the first accounts I was given was the Clinton Chamber of Commerce. This would have been about 9 years ago - I had less than a year of experience at Mansell Media under my belt at this point. I had no idea what Chamber of Commerce even meant or what they did. After a few days of meetings with the Chamber, & researching other Chambers and what they were doing on social media, I quickly learned how vital they are in the community!

The Clinton Chamber of Commerce was a pretty big account for me, and I spent a good bit of time working for them each day - creating content for posts, attending & photographing ribbon cuttings, meetings to discuss advertising strategies, etc. I have enjoyed the experiences and involvement! With that experience, came growth. We were able to add other Chamber of Commerces to our agency and help them grow their social media presence.

With the experience I have working with several Chambers,I am always ready to answer the question of "what exactly does a chamber do?" or "what are the benefits of me joining the chamber?"

And to answer that, I would say:

A Chamber of Commerce plays a vital role in supporting and promoting the local business community. Here are some key functions and benefits provided by a Chamber of Commerce:

  1. Networking opportunities: Chambers of Commerce organize various events, such as business socials & networking opportunities which allow businesses to connect and establish valuable relationships with other local businesses and potential customers.

  2. Business advocacy: Chambers of Commerce serve as the voice of businesses in their community. They advocate for policies that benefit businesses and the local economy, represent the interests of their members at various levels of government, and work towards creating a favorable business environment.

  3. Business support services: Chambers of Commerce provide a range of services to their members, such as business training and educational programs, access to resources and expertise, and guidance on starting or expanding a business. They may also offer discounted rates on various services.

  4. Marketing and promotion: Chambers of Commerce actively promote their members and the local community as a whole. They often maintain directories and online listings of businesses, organize marketing campaigns, and participate in community events to raise awareness about the local business community.

  5. Community development: Chambers of Commerce play a role in the economic development and overall well-being of their community. They collaborate with local organizations and government entities to attract new businesses, foster job growth, and support community initiatives.

  6. Business connections: Chambers of Commerce provide opportunities for businesses to connect with potential customers through events, referrals, and shared resources. They act as a hub for business-to-business and business-to-consumer connections, helping members expand their reach and grow their customer base.

Overall, a Chamber of Commerce serves as a bridge between businesses, government entities, and the local community, working towards a prosperous and thriving business environment. By providing a range of resources, advocacy, and networking opportunities, they contribute to the success of their members and the overall economic growth of the community.
