Reaping the Benefits of Gratitude on Social Media

by Susalyn Bennett

Hands holding a slip of paper that says thank you

“Expressing gratitude is associated with a host of mental and physical benefits. Studies have shown that feeling thankful can improve sleep, mood and immunity. Gratitude can decrease depression, anxiety, difficulties with chronic pain and risk of disease. If a pill could do this, everyone would be taking it. Our brain is designed to problem-solve rather than appreciate. You often must override this design to reap the benefits of gratitude.” Source: https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/can-expressing-gratitude-improve-health

Revell Ace Hardware writes a thank you post to a customer review

We all remember and appreciate acts of generosity. Showing gratitude on social media can help build our brand, create stronger bonds with customers and demonstrate our genuineness.

None of us do it alone. In addition to our wonderful customers, it is important to recognize and thank those who have helped us by sharing their ideas, inspiration, facts... We can acknowledge the originators of ideas and data that we’ve used in our posts and promotions with the “@” symbol before their social media handle to notify them that they received a mention. We can also provide links to source articles, mention authors, etc.

When we thank our customers and those who engage with us on social media they may go on to champion our brand, spreading the word to their friends and family! Priceless!

Eight Ways to Thank Customers on Social Media:

  1. Post a photo of your team with a thank you message for customers.

  2. Thank followers when you reach a milepost.

  3. Reply to comments and direct messages: let them know you appreciate their support and value them as a customer. You might even offer a special discount or other promotion.

  4. Feature someone in a blog post and perhaps invite them to share a guest blog post.

  5. Give someone a shout-out on X, Threads… Endorse someone on LinkedIn.

  6. Re-share customers’ social media content on your pages. Sharing user-generated content makes your customers feel appreciated and encourages them to engage further with you. The next time a follower checks-in or uses your product and documents it on social media, make sure to re-share it.

  7. Make a video of yourself thanking your customers and share it, e.g., to reels, stories, or any of your social media feeds. If you personalize the video by naming your customers, that can make them feel extra special.

  8. Hold a Giveaway. An Instagram or Facebook giveaway lets your customers know there are additional benefits to supporting your business, while growing your brand and boosting engagement.

We are grateful for our customers, followers and supporters and now is a great time to show them!
